Description

Medical personnel shuffled around the busy maternity ward of one of the U.S.S. Nightingale’s many medical treatment centers. Most were attending to Andorian bondgroups and their new offspring – some cooing contently in the loving arms of their new parents, whilst others loudly made their needs known.

It had been centuries since Andoria had seen a baby boom. As the proud civilization faced its own impending demise troubled relations with the Federation had led to political upheaval, secession for the interstellar alliance, and finally readmission just a few years later. The discovery of a cure for their dilemma had at last led the Borg-ravaged world into a new era of hope. At last they were recovering.

Now, as Captain zh’Rheuris smiled down at a wiggling Androian infant in an incubator cubicle, the struggle all seemed worthwhile. She had feared greatly for the future of her people and even faced their scorn as she chose to stay within Starfleet Medical following their fracture from the Federation. Finally, however, the hard work and genetic research of countless gifted scientists was bringing new life to the galaxy. She reached forward and offered the baby her little finger. Reflexively the child gripped it firmly with his tiny blue hands, tugging and shaking excitedly. A swell of pride at what they’d accomplished manifested as a fulfilled smile.

“It’s hard to believe just a few short years ago the Andorians were staring at their own extinction.” The Captain had been joined by one of the projects leading physicians, Dr. Mehley Leylan. Together they stood here for a moment marveling at the miracle of life. Dr. Leylan, whilst no longer officially part of Starfleet, had volunteered her expertise to the program as a civilian advisor. Talents wasted, zh’Rheuris felt, in her humble general practice back on Earth.

“And you’re name will go down in the annals of our people, doctor, as one of its saviors.” The Captain delicately retrieved her finger from the child, who seemed to irritatedly reach and grasp for its return. She smiled at Mehley grabbing her forearms in a gesture of earnest gratitude. “On behalf of my people, I thank you.” After a brief pause to gauge the doctors abashed humility she continued. “Come with us, Mehley, Starfleet medical needs all the doctors it can get right now…” Even before zh’Rheuris could finish Mehely we shaking her head.

“No, no I don’t think so.” The good doctor said offering a polite yet thin smile. “I left that life behind a long time ago. I’m happy now. Gallivanting the stars is not for me.” Mehley cringed as she suppressed painful memories of comrades lost. She had served aboard the U.S.S. Avery – C when the ship was destroyed at the battle of Bentusi prime, going down with almost half her crew. Among those lost was the ships first officer, Peter Aspinall, one of Mehley’s closest confidants. Wincing briefly she shook off the memories that still haunted her dreams.

Seeing her obviously pain Captain zh’Rheuris grasped her reassuringly before dropping the matter. “Then I guess it’s time we got you back to Earth.” She feigned a smile and looked around the busy medical center. “We’ll be departing with the Gaskin within the hour, if your teams can have our many guests on their way by then.”

“Aye, Captain. I’m sure our new parents will be eager to return to the surface.”
